VH-ADZ Douglas DC-2-115G
(c/n 1376)
This blurry image, from the Maurice Austin
collection, is the only photo I have ever seen of this
DC-2
while in ANA service. Formerly KLILM's PK-AFL, it escaped to
Australia in the early
days of WW II
and was given a local USAAF serial (41-1376) and the radio call sign
VHCXG.
In 1944
it was re-serialed by the USAAF as 44-83227 and designated a C-32A
which was all
rather
academic since it was released from military duties and registered
VH-ADZ to ANA in
January of
that year. It was given the name
'Mengaga'. I suspect the above shot, at Adelaide's
Parafield Airport, was taken in early1945.. Just after that
it was retired from service although
restored in
1949, and sold to Sid Marshall who re-registered it VH-CDZ.
