The Horsley was built to Air Ministry Spec 26/23 and beat
out, in fact, the Bristol Berkeley, the
Westland Yeovil
and the Handley Page Handcross for the honors in receiving a production
con-
tract. The Spec
originally called for a two seat bomber capable of hauling a 500 lb
bomb or tor-
pedo for 1,200 miles,
although production Horsleys were often called on to load a 1,500 lb
bomb
or torpedo over shorter
ranges.. Since the example above is carrying an "S" serial number I
assume
that it was a Fleet
Air Arm torpedo bomber and may have originally been on
floats.
