Western
Air Lines Lockheed L-188A Electra
N9744C (c/n 1140)
Western were one of the first airlines to order the Electra, eventually
possessing a fleet of twelve
of them. They flew
with the airline for the decade of the 1960s and were then replaced
with pure
jets. Seen
above is N9744C on the day of its delivery in 1961, having just made
the twenty-five
mile trip from Lockheed's
in Burbank. This machine was later converted to the
L-188PF mixed
passenger/freighter
variant and sold to Reeve Aluetian Airways in Alaska in 1970.
