United Air Lines
Boeing 40-B-4 NC178E
(c/n 1096)

This nice Boeing Airplane Co photograph was taken
in June 1931, two months before I was born.
It depicts one of the Boeing 40-B-4s which came
from Pacific Air Transport/Boeing Air Transport.
Later on, either in 1934 when
the new air mail contracts were let, or even before that, the four comp-
onent lines which made up United lost their identities and the roundell
was replaced (see shot below)
with a
map showing United's route structure. (The lower machine probably
was ex-Varney Air Lines.)
