Northwest
Airlines Douglas DC-4-1009 NC6403
(c/n 43913)
In 1946 Northwest
ordered three new "purpose-built" (i.e. vs ex C-54) DC-4s from Douglas.
These were immediately placed into
service on the prestigious non stop New York to Chicago
route. NC6403 was the second of
them. Further DC-4 acquisitions were all of the ex-military
C-54 type (see
next entry). This particular aircraft was sold to
Trek Airways in South Africa
in 1958 as ZS-CIG. It came
to grief in a forced landing in the desert near Assiout, Egypt in 1960.
