Delta Air Lines
McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32
N3316L (c/n 47025)
This photograph of
N3316L was among the last airline photographs to be added to my black
and white
collection. It was received
from Delta Air Lines in 1967 when the aircraft above was
new. The DC-9s were
first ordered in 1963 and again Delta pulled off a "first" being the
first to
offer DC-9 service in
the US. This occurred on 29 November 1965 when a scheduled
aircraft
left Atlanta bound for Kansas City with
a stop in
Memphis. Eventually Delta went on to fly more
than 50 of these "short" DC-9s.
As a footnote, in 1965 C.E. Woolman who
had been President of Delta for 20 years relinquished
the active post to C.H. Dolson. Sadly, a
year later Collett Everall Woolman, the founder of Delta
Air Lines passed away.
