Delta Air Lines
Lockheed L-100 Hercules N9258R (c/n
4170)
In the 1950s Delta, along with most other carriers
realized the potential of the air cargo market.
In 1967 they received three Lockheed
L-100 Hercules aircraft to replace the five Curtiss C-46s
previously used for these
duties. The outstanding photograph above was taken by Bob
Garrard
at the Greater Cincinnati
Airport at Covington, Kentucky when the L-100 was brand new in
February of
1967. Although normally used for commercial air cargo it
was being used this day
for company business to transport an engine for a
Convair 880. N9258R went to Pacific Western
Airlines in 1973 as
CF-PWK. An image of it in this livery can be seen at

It was then sold to
Northwest Territorial Airways and was destroyed by fire whilst
unloading gasoline
some 320 km east of
Inuvik, NT on 11 April 1982.
Bill Larkins saw
sister ship N9268R (below) at San Francisco International in August
1968.
