Avalon Air
Transport Grumman G-21A Goose N328
(c/n B127)
Avalon Air Transport was founded
in 1953 by veteran aviator Dick Probert. It was based at
Long Beach Municipal Airport and provided services
from there to Santa Catalina Island (of
"Twenty-six miles across the Sea" fame). Take off was from
LGB's runway and landing was
in
Avalon Harbor. I had the honor of sitting in the right hand seat
on one memorable occasion.
AAT
operated some fourteen Grumman Gooses (shouldn't that be Geese?) at one
point or another,
but not all at once. Those
most I ever saw together was seven. In 1961 the
livery was changed
from white and dark blue to
a light and dark blue scheme as seen below, which was getting the
salt water washed off its
bottom.. I believe it was only worn for one season. In
1963 the corp-
orate name was changed to
Catalina Airlines.
