ZK-ASA de Havilland D.H.82a Tiger
Moth
(c/n 3630)
This was the former
ZK-AFO, impressed into service in WW II as NZ2720.
Released from RNZAF service in 1948 it
became as ZK-ASA. (New Zealand
did not civilianize
its aircraft with the original registration, but gave them new ones).
It was issued
(free) to the Hawera Aero Club and sold by them to Air Contracts
Ltd of
Masterton as a top-dresser. It is seen above is this poor quality
shot just
after delivery to that company in 1948. . Converted back to normal
configuration
in late 1956 it had a series of owners over the years winding up with
the late John
Galpin of Te Puke in August 1981 and canceled from the register.
It was re-
registered as ZK-AFO on 6 November 1981, and was supposedly undergoing
restoration by Johns' son Tim who is an aircraft mechanic.
Status unknown as
of 2020..
