VH-UXZ de Havilland D.H.89A Dragon
Rapide
(c/n 6365)
This Rapide was delivered new to ANA on 15 September
1937. It was given the name "Marika"
and,
although that titling is washed out in the image above (taken at
Mascot, Sydney), it is visible in
the shot immediately below,
shown loading passengers at Essendon, Melbourne for Adelaide in
October 1938.
Under that is a photograph from the Fred Niven collection (see
credit below).
Finally, at the foot
of the page is another Mascot, circa 1938
photo (love those ladies'
hats).
VH-UXZ crashed into the sea at Tanners
Bay, off
Flinders Island on 29 May 1943 while
attempting a
landing approach with one engine shut down.
Photos top and bottom
(Mascot) are from the Geoff Goodall collection.
Second photo
(Essendon) from an album donated to the Civil Aviation Historical
Society by
Ian Leslie (via Phil
Vabre).
Third image is by 'Early Birds' pilot Bill Bennett,
courtesy of the Fred Niven collection.
